🔥 Make Your Own Firestarter (The Cozy Way)

While you’re staying with us, we’ve got a little homestead hack you might love — it’s simple, effective, and honestly just kind of fun. Using two things you probably already have, you can create a lightweight, reliable firestarter that works in almost any weather.
We’ve tested it in damp woods, wind, snow, and it still gets the job done.
This DIY trick is part of our own emergency kits — and now it’s here for you, too.
What You’ll Need:
-
Dryer lint (grab it after a towel load — trust us, it’s prime fire fuel)
-
Petroleum jelly (there’s a tub here if you forgot yours!)
Mix the lint and jelly until it’s fully coated but still easy to handle. You want a good, waxy texture that you can wrap around a stick or tuck into a kindling pile. Once it’s made, you can store it in a little ziplock bag (we have extras if you need one) and keep it in your hiking pack or jacket pocket for later.
To Light a Fire:
-
Grab a few dry sticks or kindling (we keep a stash for you).
-
Wrap your firestarter around a small stick or wedge it under the kindling.
-
Light it — and watch it burn strong for around 5 minutes.
-
Add more kindling and build up your fire once it’s going.
Even if everything around you is a bit soggy (looking at you, coastal forest), this little hack can save the day.
It’s just one more way to make your stay warm, memorable, and maybe even a little more self-reliant.
If you try it, snap a pic and tag us — we love seeing your fireside moments! 🔥✨
